The ultra-trendy city of Malmö is the third largest in Sweden and offers plenty of things to see and do, whether you’re here for a week or a weekend.

Malmö Castle is a Renaissance fortress steeped in history, and St Peter’s Church, the city’s oldest building, offers guided visits to see its spectacular altarpiece and medieval paintings.

The Turning Torso, designed by Santiago Calatrava, twists 90 degrees from top to bottom and rises around 190 metres. Malmö Art Museum houses stunning works and temporary exhibitions, including landscapes by Carl Fredrik Hill from the 1870s and portraits by Alexander Roslin.

Folkets Park has playgrounds, open-air events and rides, Stortorget is the city’s largest square with cafés all around, and Kungsparken’s gardens are perfect for a stroll or a picnic. The City Library stocks English-language books and newspapers and is beautifully lit at night.

The 19th-century Garden Society of Gothenburg is a lovely picnic spot and the Botanical Garden is perfect for relaxing. Liseberg, Scandinavia’s largest amusement park, has games, music and fast rides.

Uppsala combines the hustle and bustle of a busy city with the tranquillity of a countryside escape, just a short drive from Stockholm, and there’s plenty worth exploring.

Skokloster Castle is a Baroque castle with collections of textiles, weapons and books. It was never finished, and the builders’ tools remain where they were left. The Uppland Museum, in a renovated water mill, has interactive exhibitions on the city’s history.

The botanical gardens are among the oldest in the country, with a 200-year-old orangery and a rainforest house.

Uppsala Cathedral, built from around 1270, is the largest in Scandinavia and the burial place of King Gustav Vasa and King Johan III. Inside are an 18th-century Baroque pulpit, the medieval Saint Anne altarpiece and the reliquary of Saint Erik, alongside modern art including candle trees by Olof Hellström, wooden sculptures by Eva Spångberg and Mary by Anders Widoff.
